As hard as I try to clear out my closet twice a year, it pretty much happens every other year. The sorting process is two fold, donate or sell on ebay? A few years ago, I did a major clean-out and among the items were a red short wool belted trench jacket and a wool houndstooth mini-skirt. Of all the items I've ever sold and donated, those two are probably the two items I shouldn't have ever unloaded. So you're wondering why on earth did I get rid of those two things? I operated under the rule..."If you haven't worn it in a year it's time to let it go." I agree with that rule for the most part but with classics...maybe you just shouldn't get rid of it...EVER... What are your thoughts on the 1 year rule?
I'm one of those people that throws away one thing if I buy something new. I hate clutter, and clothing and shoes just become clutter when you haven't worn it in awhile. I'm not sure about the exact one year rule, but if you haven't touched it in a couple years at least, it should be out of your closet. love the coat by the way :)

I see a lot of sense in the 1 year rule, but I hardly ever got rid of things that I bought. There were a few items that I eventually donated or ebayed, but I still have pretty much everything I've ever purchased. And thinking back I feel so sorry about selling a certain bag and pair of wedge shoes.... I wish I kept them. :) Oh well...

I just found Zara shirt in my closet that I haven't worn in three years, I did some DIY stuff and it is ready for re-use! Ilina
If you have the space - I think you should save clothing. Especially if it's high quality. So many things I have thrown out have come back in style and I wish I'd kept them!!

Erm...I think the 1 year rule is fair. I kind of practise that as well. There's only 1 thing I threw and regretted so far. A pair of brown pumps. Can't find any that I really like to replace till now. It's been 1.5 years now that I've been searching for a pair.

Since I consider myself more of a clothes 'hoarder' the one year rule it's not something that I always follow... that being said, I do tend to organize my closet quite often and when I get rid of stuff, they're usually things that I know won't fit me anymore or that I know for sure I won't be wearing because of my current lifestyle. But yes, I do have some regret donating or given away certain items because they have come back on trend!

I think if the piece is classic you should only get rid of it if it not longer fits you. Otherwise you will regret getting rid of it and then end up buying another one.

I don't follow the one year rule, but I do try and take things out of the closet, put them in a bag, and bring them in another room. If I don't miss them and can't remember what is in the bag, then I don't need them.

The cloche style suits you, I have one I bought a couple of years ago and keep dragging it out along with a couple of other head gear purchases during the cooler months. I also have a cerise jacket that I was going to donate (from the UK) as its a bit too big, but I cant seem to part with it yet. The houndstooth shirt is fabulous, a great find Bessie.

I usually keep my stuff for a couple of years then if I haven't worn it or it's outdated, it's gone. I LOVE this outfit. The hat is so cute, the coat just makes me so happy and the top is so awesome.

Hi Bessie, The hounds tooth and the fascia is gorgeous. On the subject of editing the closet.. it depends. As soon as someone says.. the rule is.. I start to give it a second thought. Usually clothes that haven't been worn in a year or so are probably not going to be worn much. If the item is a classic, I generally don't give it up that easily.

I love this look! About the closet question this is my theory: I think most people (stylists, organizers etc) are most in NYC or cities helping people with very little closet space. Yes in that case it makes sense. But I feel that if you love it and you have room you should keep it. You've spent the money, you probably won't get even half that money back if you try to sell it so why just get rid of it? Even if you leave it in a spare closet, you never know!! I am so lucky to have a lot of closet space and I rarely give anything away unless I know the quality isn't great or it's wearing out!!

ReplyDeleteFor the most part, I agree with the one year rule. But, I just opened up my suitcase where I keep my offseason clothes and I noticed that there are a lot of items that I'm just not wearing, though they could be used.
I think you should hang on to classics but if something hasn't been worn for a year I do think its a good time to purge!!

But for classic items, I suppose you wouldn't have given them away if you thought they were classic and wore them often. Maybe there was something about them that truly was "off" so you got rid of them. Sometimes we have an ideal memory of that those items were, when in reality, there was a real valid reason you gave them up. Don't doubt yourself!

I have some pieces that are classic and perfect for the future life I imagine myself to have so just because I haven't worn them does not mean that they are any less amazing then my go to items. The things that come to mind are 2 pieces: my black mini herve leger skirt and a cream colored Carolina Hererra sheath. They are timeless and easy to put into different situations... they just haven't come up for me :D
